Frequently asked questions
Do I need a powerful laptop to use this?+
No — that's the point. Any laptop, Chromebook, or tablet with a modern browser can run the console. For the smoothest experience we recommend using Microsoft Remote Desktop (free) once your VM is running, but the in-browser console works everywhere.
Do you resell capacity from AWS, Google Cloud, or another provider?+
No — every server runs on our own hardware, sourced, configured, and maintained by our own team. There's no reseller markup and no third-party cloud sitting between you and the machine.
What software licenses do I need to bring?+
We pre-install common free/edu-tier software (QGIS, Office, Python tooling). For licensed software like AutoCAD or ArcGIS Pro, you typically activate it with your school-provided student license the same way you would on a personal PC.
How fast is VM creation?+
Most CPU VMs finish provisioning in under 2 minutes; GPU VMs with larger images typically take 3-5 minutes. You'll see live status in your dashboard the whole time.
Can I keep my VM running 24/7?+
Yes — VMs run until you stop them, drawing from your credits while they're on. Idle auto-stop is off by default; you can turn it on from the VM's page with a timer anywhere from 15 minutes to 4 hours. Stopped VMs keep your disk and files and only use a little credit for storage — starting one back up takes under a minute.
What happens if I run out of credits?+
Your dashboard warns you once you have less than an hour of runtime left. If your balance reaches $0, your VMs are deleted along with their files — so add credits before then, and stop VMs you aren't using (a stopped VM only uses a little credit for its storage).
Is my data private from other students?+
Yes — every VM runs on its own isolated network segment. No other student, and no automated process besides our own monitoring, can access your VM or its files.
Can I get a discount as a student?+
Not automatically right now — pricing is the same for everyone. If a student discount launches, it'll be announced here first.
What if my VM breaks or won't boot?+
Contact main@staticgpu.com from the support page. Our team can inspect VM status and, with your permission, help troubleshoot directly.
